Sport - Queenwood

Sport

Team-spirit, leadership and active living.

Promoting life-long enjoyment of physical activity and the development of each individual’s skills and talents.

Sport is an important part of a Queenwood education. Physical Education lessons are timetabled from Kindergarten to Year 10 and virtually all our girls opt to participate in extra-curricular sport.

Junior School Sport

An extensive range of activities is offered for students from Kindergarten to Year 6, including Athletics, Dance, Equestrian, Fencing, Gymnastics, Sailing and Snowsports to name a few.

The full range of sports and activities and detailed information about each are available for download in the On Offer Booklet.

All students participate in a one-hour PE lesson each week and a one-hour Sport session fortnightly. Sport for girls in K–2 is held at School whilst Sport sessions for Years 3–6 are held offsite at local council grounds or the facilities at Senior School. Personal Development and Health lessons are also taught.

House Carnivals

Various house sport competitions are held each year including swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals.

There are three houses at Queenwood.
QUEEN: Gold and Green
WOOD: Red and White
SCHOOL: Blue and Brown

All students are advised of their school house allocation upon commencement at Queenwood. Girls who have older siblings or other family connections to a particular house will be placed in the same house.

Whilst the emphasis is on participation, top place-getters are acknowledged through ribbons, cups and certificates. Students are selected to represent Queenwood at the inter-school level.

Sport Pathways

Junior Relay Team, Bronze Medalists at the CIS State Athletics. September 2025.

Queenwood Junior School is a member of the Independent Primary Schools Heads Association (IPSHA), which is the governing body for our inter-school sport program and pathway for talented ath-letes to compete at higher levels.

Inter-school sport is available to students in Years 4 to 6, with a different sport offered each term. Matches are played on Saturday mornings at a range of venues and a training session is held during the week.

Queenwood enters teams across divisions in the IPSHA competitions. This enables students to com-pete at an appropriate level to effectively play and develop their skills.

IPSHA also provides a pathway for elite athletes to compete at higher levels. This process is applied to individuals as well as team sports. The elite sporting pathway is: IPSHA > CIS > NSWPSSA > SSA

“At Queenwood, we recognise the importance of health and physical activity in the development of well-rounded individuals and aim to foster a passion for being active. This means providing opportunities for enjoyment, developing skills across a range of sports and displaying good sportsmanship. We also aim to extend those who have a stronger competitive spirit.”

Participation

Sophia T (Year 7), representing NSW U14 Hockey at the National Championships.

Participation in the sports program is voluntary but over 90% of girls choose to play in 18 different sports ranging from Basketball to Water Polo.

Our ethos is one of participation and enjoyment. We have the expertise to develop athletes of all levels, and both novice and elite players can experience the intrinsic joy of movement, the satisfaction of acquiring new skills and the inspiration of team spirit. For all players, the focus is on self-improvement and realising individual potential.

Girls are encouraged to try new sports and all are given the opportunity of match play. At the elite level, we work with individuals to support them as they compete and state, national, international and even Olympic level.

In recent years, Queenwood students have competed at national and international level in sports such as Rowing, Skiing, Water Polo, Gymnastics, Equestrian and Sailing.
