Service-learning
Championing others with purpose.
At Queenwood, service-learning is a distinctive approach that blends community engagement with academic growth.
This approach encourages our students to address real-world needs, develop as responsible global citizens, and deepen their understanding of their academic disciplines through hands-on experiences. Service-learning also offers students opportunities that help form and complement their career aspirations.
Queenwood’s commitment to service-learning is rooted in the vision of the strong, independent women, who founded our School with a broader purpose.
Service has always been at the heart of our educational philosophy. We inspire students to contribute actively, through thought, word, and action, to support vulnerable and marginalised groups with respect and empathy, speak out with integrity, and take meaningful action in their communities. In this way, both the community and the students benefit equally.
“There is so much that needs reforming in our world today, so many wrongs to be righted, so many poor and sick to be tended, so many weak to be protected. Are not these high adventures, which call for women of strength and courage and purpose?”
Miss Rennie
Principal, 1931-1962
A key component of service-learning at Queenwood is self-reflection. This practice encourages critical thinking, self-awareness, and deeper learning.
Students are encouraged to reflect on their service experiences, asking themselves important questions that drive growth and understanding.
Service-learning fosters compassion and mindfulness, qualities increasingly recognised as transformative elements of education. Mindfulness enhances self-awareness, reduces judgment, and empowers students to initiate positive change. By integrating these values into the service-learning process, we help students develop a deeper, more transformative engagement with the world around them.
From our youngest students onward, Queenwood encourages active participation in learning about the issues affecting others and taking responsibility to educate themselves and advocate for change.
The Queenwood community, students, staff, parents, families, alumnae, and friends, unites in supporting a variety of causes, projects, and campaigns. Whether assisting Indigenous communities in Australia, communities in developing countries or providing support to local homeless services, our students learn that, through collaboration and service, each of us can make a tangible difference.
